The condition of a five-year-old who ran into a stock trailer while crossing a Miami street Tuesday is reportedly worse than first indicated.

According to family members, Lacy Gaines, 5, Miami, has been transported by helicopter to a Springfield, Mo hospital with two broken arms and a cracked skull. Family members also say the girl, who was initially reported on Wednesday as being boy, has suffered a brain hemorrhage, though that has not been independently corroborated due to federal patient privacy laws.

A Miami police report states Gaines was running westbound across Elm Street, just south of the intersection of Elm and Oak Lane, when she failed to stop for a southbound truck pulling an occupied horse trailer.

The truck was driven by Gayle Harrison, 53, Miami.

According to the report, Harrison told officers that he saw Gaines running across the street and that she wasn't going to stop. He swerved right to avoid hitting the child who then ran into the driver's side of the stock trailer.

Authorities had initially stated that Gaines did not appear to be seriously injured, with the exception of a possible broken arm.

The accident occurred at approximately 2:48 p.m.
