A Miami patrol car was struck while setting up a roadblock during a high-speed chase early Wednesday morning.
According to Officer Mike Kelly, just before 1 a.m., local authorities were requested to assist in a pursuit initiated by the Grove Police Department.
“We were requested by (Ottawa County Under Sheriff) Bob Ernst to set up a road block west of Miami on U.S. Highway 69 as Delaware County, Grove Police Department and Ottawa County units were in pursuit of a white pickup that was stolen from a Delaware County deputy,” Kelly said.
Kelly and Officer Ron Cravens were parked on Highway 69, west of Miami, when they observed the pursuit headed east on U.S. Highway 69.
“I could see the suspect vehicle and patrol units headed in our direction,” Kelly said. “Myself and Officer Cravens left our units and ran south toward the side of the road.”
Kelly and Cravens both stated that the suspect vehicle accelerated and headed toward Kelly's patrol car and the two officers.
“The suspect vehicle went around my unit on the south side and continued east on U.S. 69,” Kelly said. “The first police unit behind the suspect vehicle struck the open door of my unit.”
Authorities continued to pursue the suspect vehicle east through Miami and onto east 550 Road, where the vehicle struck a tree.
The suspect, later identified as Paul Edmond Lloyd, 24, of Joplin, Mo., was taken into custody at the scene of the accident.
