MONKEY ISLAND - Officials said preliminary investigations indicate a domestic dispute escalated to the point where a man shot and killed his estranged wife and two young boys Tuesday afternoon.
The incident occurred one day after Sarah Smith filed a complaint that her former common-law husband had been stalking and harassing her, officials said.
Aaron DeForest, 34, is believed to have shot and killed Smith, 26, their 2-year-old son and Smith's 4-year-old son from a previous marriage, state officials said today.
Delaware County Sheriff Jay Blackfox confirmed Tuesday that the oldest boy, Skyler Price, was found shot to death inside the living room of the home where the bodies of Smith and DeForest were found.
The younger child, Joshua DeForest, was found in a vehicle where he was strapped into a carseat, according to Jessica Brown of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.
The couple was separated at the time and investigators have indicated that it appeared the husband had shot his wife and boys before turning a small-caliber weapon on himself.
Blackfox said a call came in to the sheriff's department at 3:06 p.m. Tuesday asking that an officer check on the welfare of a convenience store clerk who hadn't shown up for work or to collect her paycheck.
When Officer Denny Martin looked inside the trailer house on Monkey Island, he found the first three bodies with apparent gunshot wounds, Blackfox confirmed.
Investigators initially indicated it appeared the shooting may have taken place around noon.
A third child of the woman was not at the scene during the shooting, the sheriff confirmed.
The sheriff said his office had secured the scene and turned it over to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for further investigation.
The bodies were released to Turner Funeral Home, the sheriff said.
