Two Kansas brothers who died Sunday in an auto-train collision near Welch have been identified.

John Patrick Nathan Short, 15, and Nicholas Andrew Short, 17, were pronounced dead at the scene after their family van entered the pathway of a Union Pacific freight train, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Reports indicate that the accident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. about a mile south of Welch on a Craig County road.

Six members of the Short family were in the 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan when John L. Short, 46, drove into the path of the 104-car train, according to Trooper Jack Rhinehart.

Sara Short, 42, wife of the driver, was transported to Craig County General Hospital where she was treated and released.

Also in the van were the couple's daughters, Alaura Short, 12, and Katherine Short, 10.

Alaura Short was treated and released from a Vinita hospital. Katherine Short remains in guarded condition today at a Joplin, Mo., hospital.

All the occupants of the van were wearing seat belts, according to the trooper's report. However, when the train struck the right, rear panel of the van the teen brothers were ejected from the van.
