The Miami Public Schools Enrichment Foundation is planning their first annual “Blue Event” at the Coleman Theatre. Slated for March 6, the event will be an elegant affair with hors d’oeuvres and drinks. An exciting live and silent auction of items will highlight the event.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for viewing and bidding on silent auction items, while the live auction will begin at 7:30 p.m..

“We are extremely excited about the generosity of the people donating to our auctions,” said Becky Dwyer, an event committee member. “I think people will be blown away with the amazing items available for bidding.”

Ted Watts, Alumni of the Year, will be honored during the event. Watts is a celebrated sports artist and has contributed a very special item for auction.

“Ted has very generously agreed to donate a custom pencil drawing for the winning bidder,” said Dwyer. “He is the only artist alive to have painted art gallery portraits of every Heisman Trophy winner as well as cover illustrations for three NCAA Basketball Championships Final Four event program covers. The winning bid includes the right to commission a special drawing created by Ted.”

The Peoria Tribe has donated heavy hors d’oeuvres for the event.

“We are extremely grateful that the tribe generously offered to sponsor the food for our event,” said Dwyer. In the past, the foundation has been supported through mail-in donations to fund their grants and scholarships to the local education system. The addition of the Blue Event will give the community an enjoyable evening out, as well as opportunity to go home with a special auction item, according to committee members.

Among the featured items will be a very special boy’s birthday party donated by Miami’s firefighters. It will be a complete function with a party at the firehouse to include lunch, a cake, balloons and full party decorations. For the girls, the MHS cheerleaders are hosting a birthday cheer party, also with a cake, decorations, and exciting activities for the kids.

Another item with local flavor is a bronze sculpture of Steve Owens. The bronze was originally created by the late Nick Calcagno with the Enrichment Foundation in mind. It is the same piece that the University of Oklahoma used in the Heisman Park outside Gaylord Memorial Stadium in Norman.

A very special Evening on Grand Lake for eight will be auctioned. This event includes a social hour at a lakefront home followed by a relaxed cruise to one of the beautiful Duck Creek yacht clubs for dinner. Another popular auction item will be ten hours of spring landscaping labor to prepare for spring and summer. In all, over twenty live auction items will be offered.

“MPSEF is hoping to make this an annual event. We are very encouraged by the support received when soliciting auction items.,” said Dwyer. “In addition to the live auction items, we will have many attractive items in our silent auction. These include a pedicure once-a-month for a year, his-and-her designer sunglasses, gift certificates from several local restaurants, and more.”

The Miami Public Schools Enrichment Foundation funds grants and scholarships that encourage teachers, counselors, school sites and faculty to develop innovative programs to stimulate thought and also expand the existing curriculum. Last year the foundation distributed over $35,000 in support of Miami schools.
