Authorities say there is no indication of foul play in the death of a 9-year-old Commerce boy found unresponsive in his home Sunday evening.
“We are investigating the cause of death, but at this point we do not suspect foul play,” said Ottawa County Undersheriff Bob Ernst.
Austin Smith, a third grader at Wilson Elementary, was found lifeless in the shower Sunday evening.
An initial autopsy report Wednesday left no indication that the young boy had suffered any recent life-threatening injury or illness.
“It had been reported that Austin had an accident last week while playing on a trampoline,” said Ernst. “We initially suspected he may have had accidental internal injuries that lead to his death. However, the medical examiner found nothing to substantiate that.”
Counseling was made available to students at Wilson Elementary following the loss of their classmate.
“Austin was very positive,” said Ron DeWeese, counselor. “He loved soccer. He was always smiling – a very happy boy. He will be dearly missed.”
The sheriff’s office is working with the State Medical Examiner’s office to determine the cause of death.
