Thursday morning, while waiting for the school bus, a group of Miami children were approached by a man who tried to lure them into his vehicle, according to authorities.

Officer Joey Williams was approached by a student who informed him that a man in a light colored van stopped at the bus stop and asked the group if they wanted a ride to school.

“After the children refused to get in the suspect's vehicle, the suspect left the area,” Williams said.

According to Detective Chris Leamon, a similar incident occurred on Sept. 27, at approximately 7 p.m.

A police report indicates that two young boys were walking in the 2300 block of North Elm when they were approached by “ aan older man” driving a full size van

“The suspect pulled up to them and asked them to get in the van,” said Williams.

Officers were called to a residence on Willow Lane just before 8 p.m., where the homeowner reported another similar incident involving their child.

The suspect is described as an elderly white male with gray, balding hair and a gray beard.

The suspect's vehicle is an older model full-size van, possibly light blue with gray or tan stripes. The children all reported seeing a doll hanging from the rear view mirror.

Anyone with information about the individual is asked to contact the Miami Police Department at 542-5585.

“Parents need to remind their children to stay away from people like this,” said Detective Chris Leamon. “Tag numbers are an officers friend. If anyone can get a tag number for the described vehicle, it will help.”
