The Miami Public Library is going to show its support its “friends” with a luncheon Saturday.
“We're holding a soup and salad luncheon in appreciation of all that the members of the 'Friends of the Library' do for our library,” said Connie Bradley, children's librarian.
The only requirement for attending the luncheon is that one be a member of the “Friends of the Library” and that one make a reservation.
“We need to know how many are coming so we will be prepared,” Bradley said.
The staff of the library is preparing the food which will include blueberry chicken salad, Oriental salad, vegetable soup, creamy cheesy potato soup and chicken chili soup served with tortillas.
Dessert will include famous chocolate chip cookies and chocolate toffee cake.
The “Friends of the Library” was founded in 1985 to help the library in any way possible.
Currently the library has approximately 100 members.
The library is waiting for a floor mat for the entrance that the “Friends of the Library” purchased.
Other equipment the “Friends” have recently purchased for the library include an easel for pictures, chairs and a chair cart for the upstairs meeting room, bulletin boards for the entrances and computers.
In the past, the “Friends” have purchased the statue in front of the library on Main Street, the upstairs kitchen, MacGregor's Garden in the children's department, the security gates and complete sets of the Nancy Drew and Boxcar Children series.
They have also sponsored Oklahoma authors' visits to Miami including Billie Letts, Tim Tingle, Dayna Dunbar and Rilla Askew, and performers for the Summer Reading Program.
One of the things the “Friends” is most famous for is the annual book sale which will be May 2 and May 3 this year in the Miami Civic Center.
Thousands of new and used books are sold for a quarter.
Procceds help the “Friends” finance their projects for the library throughout the year.
Membership in the “Friends” runs a calendar year. Memberships are $5 for supporters, $15 for members, $25 for families, $50 for “authors” and $75 for “publishers.”
“Friends” members should call the library at 541-2292 to make reservations.
