The search for a missing Joplin teen ended Thursday.

The body of 15-year-old Weston Powell was found at 1:30 p.m. in Spring River approximately 300 yards south of Boxton Mills Bridge, where Powell and four of his friends jumped off of Sunday.

According to Cherokee County Kansas Sheriff Steve Norman, Powell's body was found floating in the river in the same area where cadaver dogs picked up a scent Wednesday.

“We were a little concerned about the weather that was going to be approaching us, Norman said of Thursday's anticipated thunderstorms. “We had several boats that were on the water that we were going to pull off the water at about 5 p.m., but again thankfully, we found what we were looking for.

Norman added he was glad they were able to give Powell's family closure and end the search.
