MIAMI – The Miami Regional Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Miami Arts & Humanities Council and the 66 Cultural District, is seeking an artist to paint a mural inside its headquarters, “Miami Main,” at 11 S Main Street in Miami, Oklahoma. Preference will be given to an artist with a connection to Miami. This connection can be current or former residence or employment in Ottawa County, Oklahoma; affiliation with NEO A&M College; a history of participation in area events; and/or a particular fondness for the community. The artist must be 18 years of age or older.
Persons interested in being considered for this project, should please plan to attend an artists’ reception and information session on Friday, Sept. 7, which is the first day of Miami’s “FestiFall.” The Chamber of Commerce will be celebrating the anniversary of its move to the building with an open house that Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Miami Main. At noon is the official unveiling of the history mural in the lobby and the dedication of the Miami Oklahoma Barn Quilt painting in the conference room. The Call for Artists Reception begins at 1 p.m. Further information about the project and an application form will be available.
The theme of the mural is the future of working and living in Miami, Oklahoma. The painting is to represent an optimistic spirit of innovation that builds upon the history of the area and encompasses business, technology, agriculture, education, community, well-being, and quality of life into the future.
Color and abstraction are highly encouraged.
This indoor mural will cover an area that is 24’ long and 10’ high, and which begins 4’ above the floor.
The artist must be able to work from a scaffold and paint to the ceiling, which is 14’ from the floor.
The wall is brick covered in plaster and primed with white paint. The surface of the wall is irregularly textured.
Because the building is a busy office and meeting space and it may not safely vent fumes, spray paints are not to be used.
This “Future Mural” will accompany a history painting on an adjacent wall, which is a visual document of commerce in the Miami area. Starting with the founding of the community in the late 19th century, it shows development over the decades to the present, focusing on what has brought people to the region. As this mural ends, the corner turns to the future and to the wall of the Future Mural. The historic mural is realistic and highly detailed; the new mural should be exuberantly contemporary in design.
The selected artist will have three weeks to complete the mural, and it must be ready for unveiling during Miami’s Mural Fest 66 in April of 2019.
The application form and design sketches will be due Sept. 28, 2018. If the Selection Committee finds an artist suitable for the project, it will announce the chosen muralist at a press conference at Miami Main on Oct. 15, 2018.
The selected artist will receive $200 toward supplies at the start of the project.
The artist will receive a $500 stipend upon completion of the mural.
Scaffolding will be provided.
Miami Main is an office and meeting space that receives a high volume of visitors, so the artist will benefit from exposure through the mural. The artist may leave business cards at Miami Main.
