Grove police continue their search for a person of interest in an alleged kidnapping attempt at the Grove Splash Pad early this week.
GROVE – Members of the Grove Police Department are searching for an older white male, after he allegedly attempted to kidnap a 1-year-old girl on Monday, July 23, at the Grove Splash Pad.
Grove Police Chief Mark Morris said the man is described as being between the ages of 55 to 65, Caucasian, with scraggly grey hair and blue eyes.
He reportedly has a slender build and weighs approximately 150 pounds. Identifying features include decaying teeth and a pronounced limp.
Morris said the man left the splash pad driving an older model black Ford Focus. As of press time, no arrests have been made in the case.
About the incident
Morris said at approximately 1:30 p.m., on Monday, Officer Ron Crawford made contact with Monica Johnson.
Johnson reported she had been at the splash pad with her two sons, ages 6 months and 4-years, and her friend's 1-year-old daughter.
Johnson said the group had been playing at the splash pad. Before leaving the park they went as a group to use the women's restroom.
As they started to leave, the girl was walking in front of Johnson and the two boys.
As she approached the restroom's door, a man stepped in the door and picked up the little girl and said, "I'm going to take her with me."
Johnson told officers she told the man to put the girl down. The man then pushed her against the wall.
Johnson reportedly pushed him back, causing the man to drop the girl.
Johnson said as he ran towards his vehicle and drove away, she was able to get all three children into her vehicle. She locked the doors and called 911.
Morris said the man reportedly left the parking lot in the black Ford Focus, turned on to Shundi and then traveled south towards 13th street. He allegedly ran the stop sign and went south towards Walmart.
Morris said officers are following up on numerous tips in connection with the case.
Morris said a reported sighting of the man in Miami, posted on social media on Wednesday, was determined not to be the man wanted for questioning in connection with the attempted kidnapping.
Persons with information about the case are asked to contact the Grove Police Department at 918-786-6121.
