MIAMI – This year will mark the 150th anniversary of Memorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day. On Monday, May 28, the City of Miami G.A.R. Cemetery will host a public Sesquicentennial Memorial Day Ceremony at 9 a.m. at the G.A.R. Monument.
The ceremony will be conducted by the American Legion Post #147 and Marine Corps Leagues Northeastern Oklahoma Detachment. The City of Miami and Associate Piper for the City of Tulsa Pipes and Drums, David Roundtree, will perform a patriotic ensemble and "Amazing Grace". The bugler will be Kason Lawrence, the grandson of G.A.R. Cemetery worker Bruce Lawrence, helping to impart the importance of honoring this holiday to area youth. City of Miami Purchasing Agent and Legal Services Coordinator, Krista Duhon, will sing the National Anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner" and will be joined by Melissa McCullough to perform "Go Rest High On That Mountain".
Associate editor Melinda Stotts of the Miami News-Record will be the guest speaker this year sharing the moving story of local WWII Veteran Glenn Pitts.
"Each person has an important story that needs to be told, recorded, and preserved for history," said Stotts. "Our veterans' individual stories are vitally important to understanding our nation's history and I am pleased to be invited to share the story of my dear friend, World War II Navy Veteran Glenn Pitts at this year's G.A.R. ceremony marking 150 years of Memorial Day observation. Glenn's story is difficult to tell, but like many veterans is a story of sacrifice and unending service."
Immediately following the ceremony, Brown-Winters Funeral Home will be serving refreshments in the gazebo.
The G.A.R. Cemetery decoration schedule for Memorial Day requires all decorations are removed from grave sites the Monday following Memorial Day, June 6 by 8 a.m.
