Gerald Givens “Jerry” Helms, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at the Leisure Living Residential Care in Miami. He was born on May 3, 1935 in Mound Valley, Kan. to Otho B. and Gabriella (Givens) Helms. Jerry grew up in Mound Valley where he attended school, until graduating in 1953. He attended Pitt State University in Pittsburg, Kan. for one year and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. Jerry served two years at Ft. Richardson in Alaska and was honorably discharged in November of 1956. He returned to Pitt State in January of 1957 and graduated with a BS degree in Business Administration in 1959. On July 19, 1957 he married Vivian B. Armstrong at the Christian Church in Welch, Okla.
After graduating college, he began working for the Prudential Insurance Company where he worked for eight years. Jerry then went to work for the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant as a Safety Engineer. He held this position until March of 1970 when he took over his father’s business in Mound Valley. He ran the business until 1982 when he returned to the Ammo plant working there as a Senior Safety Engineer until his retirement in 1995. After retirement he obtained his Real Estate Agent License and began working for the Jim Gill Agency in Cherryvale, Kan. He retired from that position in 2005.
Jerry was very active in sports during his high school years and received many recognitions for his efforts as a baseball, basketball and football player. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger years and enjoyed relating stories concerning those activities. Jerry was a member of the Mound Valley Christian Church.
Those preceding him in death include; his parents; two sisters, Wanda Faye (Nelson) Smart and Joyce G. Brusie.
Survivors include: his wife Vivian of the home; two sons, Kent A. Helms and wife Jessica of Durant, Okla.; Darren W. Helms and his life partner, Jeff Burton of Joplin, Mo.; five grandchildren, Jordan Elizabeth, Cody Lee, Justin Daniel and his wife Emily, Charity Christian and Kylee Grace Helms; three step-grandsons, Tyler, Colton and Kris; five great-grandchildren, Bentley, Blake, Landon, Sophia and Kooper; one brother, Joe Allen Helms of Dennis, Kan. and a host of other family members.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2018 at the Burckhalter-Highsmith Funeral Home Chapel in Vinita.
The celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 10 a.m., at the Welch Christian Church, with Pastors, Rick Harter and David Scott officiating.
