MIAMI — Mark Welch got tired of having to drive elsewhere so he decided to open his own lumber yard, M&D Lumber.

There used to be a couple businesses in Miami to purchase lumber and other building supplies, but now the closest is in Fairland.

“I was tired of traveling to get the stuff I needed,” said Welch, who says he stays competitive price-wise with others.

“There used to be five or six of them here in town,” Welch said. “We’re pretty competitive.”

When he was younger, Welch worked for a contractor framing houses. "That’s where my experience comes from,” he explained.

The business, located at 320 5th NE in Miami, is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

“We try to keep as much general stuff as we can - lumber, drywall, insulation, roofing supplies and stuff like that,” he said. “We can do house packages, pole barn packages. We can put packages together.”

Welch added any lumber that has to be special ordered can be delivered the following business day.

M&D Lumber has been in Miami for just over five years, having opened Jan. 14, 2013.

In 2015 M&D Lumber was recognized with a Business Spotlight Award and in 2016 was the recipient of the Project Pride Award, both granted by the Miami Regional Chamber of Commerce.
