The Moscelyne Larkin Memory Care Neighborhood cares for women with Alzheimer's/Dementia and other memory impairments.

MIAMI – The Windridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center hosted its official grand opening Thursday for its new in-patient Alzheimer’s wing.

The Moscelyne Larkin Memory Care Neighborhood cares for women with Alzheimer’s/Dementia and other memory impairments.

Friends and family of residents and staff along with the community were invited to tour the new female-only wing equipped to provide services to 22 clients in the secure and serene neighborhood-style setting.

The Memory Care program offers 24-hour nursing care and is designed to provide resident-centered activities and care focused on individual abilities instead of limitations.

The wing includes furnished bedrooms, an outside gazebo, and several indoor common areas for social and medically specialized activities. Clients enjoy individual and group activities designed to maximize social interaction, sensory enhancing features such as tactile and natural still life art, 'reminisce boxes' to visually remind them of life milestones, and an enclosed memory care courtyard.

The unit is named after famed ballerina and Native American Miamian, Moscelyne Larkin. Larkin had Alzheimer’s disease and died in Tulsa in 2012 from pneumonia. She is survived by her son, Roman Larkin Jasinski, and her legacy is honored through the Tulsa Ballet, the Oklahoma Hall of Fame, the Coleman Theatre Celebrity Park, as one of the Vintage Garden Five Moons bronze sculptures and now the Moscelyne Larkin Memory Care Neighborhood.

Larkin’s son Roman and her niece Georganna Larkin attended the grand opening, taking the tour and meeting with Windridge staff.

"I'm very happily surprised. There’s so many different ideas to take care of the people," said Jasinski "I love the soft colors in the walls. I’m very honored that it’s named after my mom. She would have absolutely loved it."
