Doris L Thornton, age 93, died on Saturday, December 16, 2017 in Ardmore, Okla. She spent most of her adult life in the Miami, Ottawa County area. She was born on September 5, 1924 at Pleasant Plains, Ill. to Raymond F. Burger and Irma (Bock) Burger. Doris attended school in Rockbridge, Ill. from which she graduated highschool. On October 14, 1942 Doris married Everett Thornton, they later divorced. Together they had two children. Doris was baptized in 1953 into the Church of Jesus Christ Restoration Branch in Miami. Doris enjoyed many years of volunteering at Integris Hospital and Commerce Senior Citizen Center. She worked at photo abstract for a number of years. Doris was very proud of traveling to the Holy Land. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, but for most of all she enjoyed giving those homemade items to family and friends. Doris especially enjoyed word games and puzzles stating she wanted to keep her mind sharp. The puzzles obviously worked as she remembered everything. Doris’s claim to fame was winning the spelling bees at Ottawa County’s Senior Spelling Bee. Her trophies were numerous and displayed where all could see.
She was Preceded in death by one brother and four sisters
She is survived by two sisters, Joyce Romero; Marge (Dave) Sladek, two children Shirley Harrison and Ben (Carole) Thorton, two grandchildren David (Beth) Harrison, Deanna (Robert) Shaw, four great grandchildren Jake, Sydni, Jackson, Kallen, 11 nephews and 13 nieces including special niece Mary, Jane White.
Visitation is on Friday, December 22, 2017 at Brown-Winters Funeral Home and Cremation Service at 10 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. with Mr. Tom Allen officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairland Cemetery.
The family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the KetcherKeheleyAnimal Shelter. Contributions can be made in care of the funeral home.
