Alfred Leonard “Lenny” Skye, Jr., age 66 of Baxter Springs, passed away at his home on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 8:11 PM.

Lenny was born in Miami, OK on October 18, 1950 to the union of Alfred L. Skye, Sr. and Florence Elizabeth (Talachy) Skye. He graduated from Baxter Springs High School with the Class of 1968, and later graduated from NEO A&M Junior College.

Lenny worked for Yellow Freight for most of his adult life. He was a resident of the Baxter Springs area for all of his life other than a period of 9 years when Yellow transferred him to Kansas City. While at Yellow, he was a member of the Teamsters Union, and also served as Union Steward. He retired in 2006.

He married Leena Margaret “Maggie” Buffalo-Van Horn. To their union was born three children, and they later divorced.

He was a very active member of the Quapaw Tribe and the Native American Church, serving a term on the Tribal Business Committee, playing the drum and singing at Pow Wow’s, and participating in many other tribal celebrations and traditional ceremonies.

Lenny also participated in the Baxter Springs Little League, serving as a coach for nearly 20 years. Additional hobbies include collecting antique tools, collecting baseball cards, and watching baseball games, especially the New York Yankees.  He was always looking for a way to help others, and loved his kids, grandkids, and extended family very much.

Survivors include his mother, Florence Skye; two sons, Nate “Tater” Skye, and Al “Pork Chop” Skye, both of Baxter Springs; one daughter, Cindy Smith of Miami, OK; one sister, Mary Beth “Bootsie” KiHega; and nine grandchildren, Morgan Westervelt (husband, Lucas), Brendan Skye, Ashton Buffalo, Tyrae Skye, Bridger Skye, Emerson Skye, Christian Smith, Frankie Buzzard, and MeLinna Buzzard.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father, Alfred L. Skye, Sr.; one son, Joseph “Jo-Pat” Skye; one aunt, Patsy Ortiz; one nephew, Richard “Fats” White; one niece, Sarah “Heeta” KiHega; and one grandson, John William Buzzard, Jr. 

Lenny will be lying in state at the Quapaw Tribal Longhouse beginning Sunday Evening. A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at 10:00 AM. Pallbearers will be Roman KiHega, Tony KiHega, George KiHega, Pete Littlecook, O.J. Littlecook, and Gideon Littlecook, and honorary pallbearers, Jesse Fry, Henry Elick, Sonny Waters, and Tom Fields.

The traditional midnight service will take place the night before the service at the Longhouse.
