David Richard Scruggs Jr., 78, of Miami passed away Sunday, September 17, 2017 at his home. David was born on July 13, 1939 in Belleville, Ill. to David Richard Scruggs Sr. and Francis Roberta (Smith) Scruggs. David graduated from Harding High School in Oklahoma City, Okla. and then went on to graduate from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn. After high school he played baseball for Oklahoma Natural Gas and for the University of Tennessee Volunteers. He then joined the United States Army National Guard. David retired from Bama Foods in Tulsa in 2007. He was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church. He married Sue Jane (Hart) in 1980 in Kingsport, Tenn. Mr. Scruggs was very involved in Miami Masonic Lodge #140, Grand Lake Shrine Club where he was a past president, Royal Order of Jesters in Tulsa, the Miami Elks Lodge; he was very active in the A Team for many years. He also enjoyed playing golf and watching the Volunteers and the Oklahoma Sooners play football. David was preceded in passing by his wife Sue Jane Scruggs, his parents David Sr. and Roberta Scruggs, his sisters Susan S. Scruggs and Patricia Trolinger.
Survivors include children David Scruggs III and his wife Cathy of Church Hill, Tenn., Elizabeth Whiting and her husband Darren of Nashville, Tenn. and Andrew Scruggs of Kingsport, Tenn. Will DeMier and his wife Teresa of Claremore, Matt DeMier of Hollywood, California, Melissa Cox of Stillwater. Other survivors include his grandchildren Myers Beaird, Reed Beaird, Sofie Whiting and Lauren Scruggs, Nicholas DeMier, Chloe Cox, Mia Cox, and his great grandson Liam Light along with other relatives and many close friends.

The family would also like to thank his care giver Lee Madison, Integris Miami Hospice and Heartland Plaza. The family would also like to extend a special thank you to his friend Dustin Foster who was like a son to him.

There will be a visitation from 6 until 7 p.m., Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at the Brown-Winters Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Miami.
David’s Celebration of Life Services is 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at All Saints Episcopal Church in Miami with Reverend Mary Koppel officiating. Services have been placed in the care of Brown-Winters Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Miami.
The family has asked that memorial contributions be made to Grand Lake Shrine Club and All Saints Episcopal Church. These contributions may be made in care of the funeral home.
