OTTAWA COUNTY – Both eastbound lanes of Will Rogers Turnpike were closed for a time at mile marker 312 eastbound in Ottawa County on Tuesday, Aug. 22 due to a semi truck catching on fire with possible hazmat materials involved.

The trailer was carrying sodium hydroxide pellets and speculation is the truck caught fire when the rear dual tires of the semi may have blown out.

The Miami Fire Department and the Quapaw Tribe Fire Department were on scene in response along with Oklahoma Highway Patrol units. Sodium hydroxide is a strong base used mostly in industry. Several explosions were heard by the reporting caller, according to OHP and the Miami Fire Department.
