COLUMBUS - After multiple attempts to flee, a woman was finally able to elude her assailant after a frightening weekend incident that left her in the ICU.

Skylar Shae Fleming, 29, was arrested by the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and is facing charges of Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Battery, Criminal Threat, Theft and Criminal Damage to Property. His is currently being held at the Cherokee County Jail on a $250,000 bond.

"Our office began investigating that incident late Friday night in rural northern Cherokee County," Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves said. "During the course of the investigation, deputies learned the victim and an estranged boyfriend left Miami, Oklahoma, earlier in the night and got into an argument."

According to Sheriff Groves, Fleming is then alleged to have stopped the vehicle numerous times while driving into Cherokee County and severely beating the woman.

"On several occasions she attempted to flee but was unsuccessful," Sheriff Groves said. "She was eventually able to run into a wooded area, which is where she hid until he left, stealing her truck and ultimately damaging it before leaving it abandoned."

Deputies located the suspect on Saturday afternoon and he was taken into custody.

The victim was transported that night to a Miami Hospital, and then later transferred to a Joplin Hospital where she was placed in ICU.
