Buffalo Run becomes 2017-2018 Sustaining Member and the Presenting Sponsor of the Fern Holland 5K with a recent donation to the Community Crisis Center.

MIAMI – Buffalo Run recently made a $2,000 donation to the Community Crisis Center of Northeast Oklahoma (CCC) to be a 2017-2018 Sustaining Member and the Presenting Sponsor of the Fern Holland 5K, which will take place Saturday, August 19, 2017.

Suzy Gorney, Ottawa County Advocate, and Kelsey Samuels, Crisis Center Assistant Director were presented the donation by Buffalo Run General Manager, Steve Bashore.

Born in Bluejacket and a Salutatorian graduate of Miami High School, Holland went on to become a Tulsa-based attorney who touched many lives. Using her knowledge of the law, Holland helped to facilitate human rights and education efforts in Namibia and Guinea, West Africa, and Iraq.

It was in Iraq in 2004 while working for the American-led Coalition Provisional Authority to include women's rights into the new Iraqi constitution that Holland's life was tragically cut short at just 33 years old.

Since her loss, Holland's family has striven to preserve her memory with a focus on honoring and continuing her work rather than the circumstances of her death.

In alignment with this vision, the CCC located in Miami dedicated its facility "The Fern L. Holland Advocacy Center" in 2012 and has coordinated the local observance of Fern Holland Week annually. The commemorative week is always set in August in honor of Holland's birthday in the same month.
