JOPLIN – A pit stop at Casey’s General Store, 2764 W. 32nd St. in Joplin, and a daydream with a friend has left Debra Shumaker with a $50,000 Missouri Lottery Powerball prize.
“I was actually on my way home from a doctor’s office appointment and decided just to go into a store, grab something to drink and a snack,” recalled Shumaker.
“My friend and I sat down at a table and were talking about how great it is to just take off and have nothing to do for the day. I told her that I sure wouldn’t be sitting here if I won the Powerball, though. We just laughed about it.”
The Miami resident would end up purchasing a Powerball ticket for the May 31 drawing.
“My husband and I went to dinner a couple of nights ago, and I said that I needed to check my ticket. So we checked it, and I was shocked,” said Shumaker, who matched four of the five white-ball numbers and the Powerball in the May 31 drawing, which were: 4, 33, 39, 46 and 60 with a Powerball number of 6.
Shumaker hopes to invest her $50,000 prize, adding that although she played Missouri Lottery Powerball every so often before, she plans to play a little more often now that she knows she can win.
Powerball is a $2 per play multi-state Draw Game that features jackpots starting at $40 million. Powerball drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:59 p.m.
