For the fourth time in five months, sales tax collections in Miami have shown an increase.

Collections in May 2017 were $545,262.28, compared to $537,119.50 in May 2016 — an increase of $8,142.78.

Companies that remit more than $2,500 monthly in sales tax receipts are required to file and pay electronically.

The monies they reported this period represent sales from March 16 to March 31 and estimated sales from April 1 to April 15.

Use tax collections in Miami for May 2017 also showed an increase of $8,540.48.

Use taxes are functionally equivalent to sales taxes. They are typically levied upon the use, storage, enjoyment, or other consumption in the state of tangible personal property that has not been subjected to a sales tax.

Afton, North Miami, Quapaw, and Wyandotte showed increases in sales tax collections.

Afton went from $26,039.25 in 2016 to $34,160.07 in 2017, an increase of $8,120.82.

Quapaw’s collections were up a whopping $7,186.81 — going from $1,856.47 in May 2016 to $9.03.28 in May 2017.

Wyandotte had sales tax collections of $454.07 in 2016 compared to $897.64 in 2017 — a bump of $443.55.

North Miami saw a bump of $1,187.12, $3,458.64 in 2017 as opposed to $2,271.52 for the same timeframe in 2016.

Effective July 1, the sales tax rate in North Miami will be 3.50 percent, up from 3 percent.

Bluejacket, Commerce, Fairland and Welch all reported declines.

Ottawa County sales tax collections for May were up $12,631.86 — $32,315.31 in 2017 and $19,436 in 2016.

Craig County collections were $25,729.69 in 2017 and $31,346.99 for 2016, a dip of $5,617.30.

In Delaware County, collections in 2017 were $32,028.16 and $25,018.97 in 2016.

The disbursement of $146,163,726 in sales tax collections returned to the cities and towns reflected an increase of $7,979,671 from the $138,184,055 distributed to the cities and towns in May last year. The use tax disbursement to cities and towns was $14,664,657.

In county returns, the counties shared in a $25,324,786 sales tax disbursement and a $2,556,968 use tax disbursement.
