J.R. and Judy Harris know exactly what it takes to build a successful business, which may be the reason they were approached by a Commerce property owner to bring some life back to a vacated building.
“Doug Nutting owns the property and he approached J.R. about opening the Westside after it closed,” said Manager Kim Sargent.
For many years, Westside has been a popular night spot in Commerce, but the place needed a little rejuvenating and that’s exactly what the Harris’ have done.
Now, Kim’s Westside Country, the tavern has been opened up to allow more space and has a seating capacity of about 100.
“We just want a nice, simple, hometown bar,” said Sargent.
The Harris’ also own Road House on Monkey Island and Road Hog Saloon in Bernice.
The bar opened last week and will kick off the summer’s events schedule with a benefit poker run and auction.
“A woman here in Commerce was diagnosed with invasive infiltrating breast cancer a couple weeks ago,” said Sargent.
Tami Lawson underwent surgery and medical bills are mounting, so Sargent decided helping her would be their first order of business.
“Tami was the Karaoke Queen at Water Dogz,” said Sargent.
The first bike out will leave at 11 a.m., with the last bike leaving at noon. The last bike in will return at 4 p.m., with food served at the last stop.
The cost is $10 each hand and participants may purchase as many hands as they like.
The benefit auction will begin at 5 p.m., with live music to follow.
“We’d like to see everyone come out and help support Tami,” said Sargent.
Regular business hours are noon to midnight, Sunday through Thursday and noon to 2 a.m., Friday and Saturday.
Kim’s Westside Country is located at 101 W. 1st in Commerce. For more information contact the bar at 675-4888.
